Christchurch Earthquakes - Chris Wadeson Revisits his Office Mess
Chris writes: - Went into our old production premises yesterday.
Have not been in since late March and there have been some very destructive aftershocks since then.
The building is going to be demolished so I was retrieving personal items for the staff.
We were on the ground floor and the next fllor up and the parapet has crashed through the roof of the top floor letting rain and snow ion for some months.
Everything was sodden and the ceiling had collapsed in several places.
You can understand why the plant was written off.
Afterwards the engineers (you have to at least one engineer with you in the Red Zone) took me for a personal tour of the Red Zone and we covered every street.
You can see it on TV and you can watch it on Youtube but the sheer magnitude of the destruction has to be seen to be believed.
Out of 2749 buildings in the CBD over 1800 will be demolished and so far they have dealt with 900 odd.
I came away shaking my head thinking that it will be at least 6 to 9 months before they can start any sort of rebuild - every single high rise is coming down.
Unbelievable and very sobering.
The view looking out the entranceway used to be packed with buildings and my office was only 4 metres away - in the buildings that you can see from the entranceway only one will remain as the others are all marked for demolition!
Cheers
