Our Book Update No: 5 - Feb 2011
The Year Ahead
2011 is here. The year ahead will be a very busy and important one for us to deliver the commemorative book for the class. We’re pleased to advise that we are on track with our project plans but it is vital that we stick to our time lines to ensure that Our Book is delivered to you for our 50th Reunion in July 2012.
2010 was also a busy year, particularly in the last quarter when the race was on to get as many ‘What happened after Nudgee’ details from you before the cut-off date. We are pleased to announce that 125 of our class mates will have their entry in this chapter of our book. This represents 81% of the guys who were in our class between 1958 and 1962. We would like to offer a ‘well done’ to all of you who have contributed.
All these pages have now been typed up and sent out to each one of you for approval and/or correction. Could you please get back to us by 31 March 2011 if you have any corrections or additions to make to your page. If we do not hear from you by this date we will assume that you are satisfied with the contents of your page.
Our prime objective for this first quarter of 2011, as far as you are concerned, is to further gather photos and stories for our book. Many of you have already contributed in this regard BUT for reasons outlined below we would like some more.
We came across this photo amongst those from Jim Wheatley which shows two basketball courts in the quadrangle outside our dormitories which surprised us as we could not remember the courts, or the basketball hoops, being there. Can anyone remember anything about our basketball activities? And what of the loudspeaker on the pole in the middle of the Quadrangle? Was it ever used?
We are endeavouring to have a DVD slideshow to accompany the book. To make this possible we would like to have as many photos as possible to choose from. We are aware that not every single photo may get used, but if we have as many as possible to choose from, some of those hidden ‘gems’ out there will get an opportunity to see the light of day. Everyone who contributes photos will get an acknowledgement.
A number of class mates who were possibly not terribly impressed with the mug shot taken from their Nudgee days have forwarded a contemporary photo. To use these we are working on a possible ‘them and now’ section in our slideshow. For this we require a current photo (or one of recent years) to include in this section. If you haven’t already sent a recent photo and would like to do so we would like it now.
Do you recognise the class mate below?
We appreciate that your Nudgee photos are precious to you and we undertake (as we have to date) to take good care of them whilst they are in our possession and to return them as soon as we can. If you are able to scan your photos yourself could you please scan them at 300dpi and save them as a .jpg file. You can then send them to us as an attachment to an Email or, if you have many, you could burn them to a CD and send that to us. If all of that is foreign to you then just post or deliver them to us and we will scan them before returning them. Once again we have a cut-off for the receipt of these items and this will be the 31 March 2011.
Thanks to you all for your efforts to date and here’s a reminder of what our project deadlines are for this first quarter of 2011:
1. Any amendments / correction to your pages to be advised to us by 31 March 2011
2. More photos of your Nudgee days and a current photo (for the then and now section) in by 31 March 2011
3. Put your thinking caps on and see if you can think of some more stories for our book by 31 March 2011
Some do not appreciate imposed time lines, others realise that they are necessary in order to keep this project on track. We will be keeping to the time line.
Note that contrary to the notice in the latest NC62 Newsletter we are NOT seeking donations and have no intention of ever doing so. When the book is completed you will be invited to purchase the book. You will be advised of the cost when we know the cost of production. We’ve had preliminary discussions with possible printers and a graphic artist to help us get a good overview of the whole book production process. There will be more on this subject later in the year.
